According to the National Institute of Mental Health, " Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave."
Characteristics of ASD can include but are not limited to impaired communication and language skills, difficulties with cognitive and learning skills, difficulties with daily living activities, struggles with socialization, repetitive behaviors, intense interests in specific topics, intense mood, and emotional reactions.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is diagnosed by child psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatric neurologists, or developmental pediatricians. The diagnosis process can be extensive.
Your child's primary pediatrician provides autism screenings during routine well visits 3-4 times -usually at 9, 18, 24, and 30 months of age. If Autism is suspected, the pediatrician will likely refer you to a developmental pediatrician or other diagnosing provider. Once you are referred to a specialist, the specialist will evaluate your child. This evaluation may include multiple appointments and can include but is not limited to medical and neurological examinations, genetic testing, hearing tests, assessments of the child's abilities, observations of the child, and caregiver interviews. Once all evaluations are complete, the provider extensively reviews his findings before meeting with the patient and caregivers to present the results and findings.
Every person diagnosed with Autism is a unique individual. What works for one person, may not work for the next. However, most professionals agree that early intervention is the most important treatment. Early intervention may include different elements depending on the individual. These can include ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, school intervention, and sometimes medication. Caregivers are advised to do their own research and work with their providers to choose what treatment works best for the child.
